Jordan Thomas works as the Youth Tutor in Aberdare for Itec’s Jobs Growth Wales+ programme. With a background rooted in sports coaching, Jordan is resolute in his mission to enact positive change within his local community and enhance the lives of young people. The Aberdare Centre, situated in the heart of Aberdare Town at Victoria’s Square, hosts a diverse array of activities and employability lessons tailored for youth, providing them with opportunities to explore various career paths and prepare for full-time employment.
Jordan found himself at a crossroads after completing his education. Unsure of his career path and facing limited job prospects, Jordan felt discouraged and uncertain about his future. Jordan initially pursued a plumbing course, a decision influenced heavily by family and friends. However, he soon realized that this wasn’t the career trajectory he truly desired. With the support of his parents, Jordan ventured into a different path, enrolling in a BTEC Level 2 Sport course, despite lacking a GCSE in Physical Education and joining the course later than others. With the guidance of his lecturer and his own determination, Jordan found his passion for coaching young people during a placement at a local primary school.
Subsequently, Jordan pursued a degree in sports coaching, actively seeking out placements to further hone his skills in aiding and coaching youth. Despite facing obstacles such as initially not achieving the desired grade in his math GCSE, Jordan’s perseverance led him to attend weekly classes and ultimately secure a B grade, unlocking numerous opportunities for him.
Armed with newfound skills, experience, and a sense of purpose, Jordan secured full-time employment with Itec as a Youth Tutor, where he continues to strive for positive change within the community. His journey serves as a testament to the transformative impact of JGW+ in Aberdare, empowering young people to overcome obstacles, pursue their passions, and achieve their dreams. Integrating seamlessly into the team, Jordan has found fulfilment in his role at Itec, contributing to the transformative impact of the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme.
