Apprenticeships in Wales

If you want to get your career going or give your existing career a boost, an Apprenticeship is a great place to start.

An Apprenticeship is a work based learning programme that helps you to develop professional skills and gain a nationally recognised level 2-5 qualification, while earning a salary – making it an excellent career choice.

An apprenticeship is a programme of learning and qualifications, completed in the workplace that provides employees with the skills, knowledge, confidence and competencies they need to progress in their chosen career or industry.

Apprenticeship programmes follow an approved ‘National Framework’ to allow employed learners to achieve their Qualification Credit Framework (QCF) at levels 2, 3, 4 and above with appropriate essential skills according to the identified level. As part of the framework you will also be required to complete two relevant assignments – Employment Rights and Responsibilities and Health & Safety.

As an Apprentice, you are guaranteed:

  • To earn a salary
  • Get paid holidays
  • Receive training
  • Get one-to-one support from our expert Assessors
  • Gain qualifications
  • Learn job-specific skills
  • Gain skills that employers want
  • Excellent progression routes

There are three levels of apprenticeships as certain jobs require different levels of qualifications, i.e. some are higher than others. The level you can apply for will depend on your current skills and qualifications.

Apprenticeships are available in the following three levels for those aged 16 years old and over;

  1. Foundation Apprenticeships (equivalent to five good GCSE passes).
Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as an NVQ Level 2 which provides the skills that apprentices need for their chosen career and allow entry to an Apprenticeship.
  2. Apprenticeship (equivalent to two A-level passes).
Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ Level 3. To start at this level, apprentices should ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed a Foundation Apprenticeship.
  3. Higher Apprenticeships
Higher Apprenticeships work towards work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ Level 4 or Level 5.
