Reverse mentoring: one-day workshop

Course summary

Reverse mentoring takes the skills, models and practices of a traditional mentoring dynamic: off-line support; mentee led; sharing insights and best practice; encouraging individual growth and learning. But at its core, reverse mentoring is anchored in a parity of esteem.

This means that both individuals will have skills, knowledge, expertise and individual strengths that have value and provide a different perspective. The one-day workshop will primarily focus on reverse mentoring in terms of more established and senior colleagues (in terms of career experience) and younger colleagues (in terms of career experience and age). This model can be mapped to a range of dimensions including: LGBTQI+ identities; BAME identities; neurodiversity; gender; career specialism; leadership styles. It has a disruptive impact on traditional ‘knowledge centres’ ensuring that the narratives and experiences of junior colleagues are shared upwards.

Globally, umbrella terms such as Baby Boomers, Millennials, and Older Adults are used to help map attitudes and mind-sets and the different ways individuals may experience technology, communication, identity, and the world of work.

Generation Z (Gen Z) born between 1995 – 2015 will have grown up in a fully digital and global backdrop. One in which talking about mental health and gender identity is the norm and having a ‘traditional’ linear career might feel quite alien. In the same vein a senior manager may find themselves leading team members whose working lives began before computers in the workplace who are much more comfortable and experienced in face-to-face negotiations, speaking on the phone, and working through changing contexts such as mergers and restructures.

This practical one-day course will give you the opportunity to explore the roles and practical skills necessary to build a successful reverse mentoring relationship. That will not only benefit the individuals involved but will build organisational resilience and break down siloed working. Creating opportunities to leverage difference, reframe discussions and create a more cohesive workplace community.
