Neurodiversity and your team

This three-hour training session will equip managers with a strong understanding of the meaning and impact of neurodiversity at work and how best to make adjustments to support the needs of neurodiverse team members and foster understanding. The training will explore a range of tools and techniques to support managers in a range of practical workplace contexts.

Course Outline
Over the half a day you will cover:
      • What is neurodiversity?
  • Understanding neurodiversity, its importance and how working effectively with neurodiversity can enhance working relationships and resilience across the organisation. How the neurodiversity approach differs from ‘traditional’ approaches to neurological differences. Overcoming myths about neurodiversity. Recognising how neurodiversity impacts on the role of the manager and the difference that can be made to teams and their contributions to the wider organisation.

    • What do we know about neurodiversity?
    A brief introduction to different forms of neurodiversity, including autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, OCD and others: key features, impact on the way the individual experiences the world and how to interact. What is the legal position relating to neurodiversity and how does this relate to matters such as mental health, disability and learning difficulties?

    • Supporting neurodiversity: joining the team:
    Explored through case studies and scenarios, how might people with different forms of neurodiversity experience the recruitment and selection process (in particular interviewing), discuss their needs within the team and experience their induction to the organisation? An exploration of the practical steps a manager can take to make adjustments and support different people through these experiences.

    • Supporting neurodiversity: day-to-day working practices:
    Explored through case studies and scenarios, how might people with different forms of neurodiversity experience day-to-day working practices such as blended working, virtual communication, feedback and performance reviews, meetings and presentations, teamwork and cooperation and the social side of work? An exploration of the practical steps a manager can take to make each of these as accessible as possible and support different people through these experiences.

    • Supporting neurodiversity: dealing with challenges:
    Explored through case studies and scenarios, how might a manager deal with challenges such as “neurodiversity spotting” (when you might wonder if a person is neurodiverse but may not want to ask), disagreements about working styles within teams and team members asking for advice and support with specific issues?

    What steps will I take as a manager to put my learning into practice and to learn more about neurodiversity at work?

Who Is This Course For?

Our Neurodiversity and your team training course is suitable for anyone, at any level of an organisation, who wishes to develop appropriate tools and understanding to be confident in supporting and promoting gender equality in the workplace. This course will provide practical tools, whether you wish to improve your own knowledge, to support and champion others, or to promote gender equality across your whole organisation. The course leader will be able to address issues specific to your role to ensure you get the most out of the training.
