Seth Jones X PSS Scaffolding

Solid Foundations: Seth Jones’ Story

Growing a skilled and experienced generation of workers in Wales is the mission of the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme.

Seth Jones’ journey emphasises the impact of JGW+ and the importance of employer involvement in the Engagement and Advancement strands. Not only has Seth developed critical skills with the help of talented Itec tutors and his committed work placement employer, PSS Scaffolding, but his dedication has also laid a solid foundation for a successful career as he steps into a full-time apprenticeship.

Here is Seth’s story:

Two years ago, Seth Jones moved from South Africa to the UK, where he enrolled in a local comprehensive school and completed his GCSEs. Feeling nervous about his next steps, Seth joined Itec Skills and Employment’s Jobs Growth Wales+ programme in Bridgend.

At the Bridgend centre, Seth spent two months following the curriculum and focusing on employability skills. He was soon introduced to Employability Officer Gareth Williams, who helps young people unlock their potential by connecting them with local employers for placements and career opportunities. Together, Gareth and Seth discussed Seth’s strengths, skills, and potential career paths. After exploring his interests, Seth expressed a desire to work in a practical, outdoor environment; scaffolding captured his interest.

Gareth reached out to Steven Brown, the director of local employer PSS Scaffolding, to introduce him to the benefits of the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme for both young people and businesses. Founded in 1984, PSS Scaffolding has delivered high-quality projects, including scaffolding for Bristol Airport, Porthcawl Pier, and the A465 bridge. As an employer familiar with the challenges young adults face when entering the workforce, Steve was eager to support Seth’s aspirations and welcomed him for a placement at PSS Scaffolding.

During Seth’s placement, Steve invested £1,000 in personal protective equipment (PPE) and essential training for him. Seth worked diligently, earning both his CISRS Operative Training Scheme (COTS) certification and a Health and Safety qualification from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). Through this experience, Seth gained crucial knowledge and confidence in his skills.

Seth’s commitment and hard work led to a significant milestone: a two-year apprenticeship with PSS Scaffolding, where he continues to learn under Steve’s direct mentorship. This apprenticeship will deepen Seth’s expertise and provide invaluable industry experience, eventually preparing him to pursue an advanced scaffolding qualification, which will open even more career opportunities.

Reflecting on his experience, Seth shares, “Gareth has supported me with this opportunity and I can’t believe the investment Gareth and Steve have made towards my career. I am very happy I joined Itec and would recommend it to a new friend.”
