Careering to Confidence: Molly’s Swift’s Journey

Molly Swift’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, support, and stepping out of one’s comfort zone. Before joining Itec, Molly had been out of education for nearly five years, finding comfort in familiarity while navigating a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and managing social anxiety.

At 19, Molly decided it was time to rewrite her story. Motivated by a dream to attend college, she enrolled in the Jobs Growth Wales+ (JGW+) programme with Itec Skills and Employment. Designed to help young adults invest in their future regardless of past challenges, JGW+ became the stepping stone Molly needed to unlock her potential.

From the outset, Molly embraced the programme’s opportunities to build independence, gain confidence, and develop essential life skills, such as establishing a daily routine and managing her time effectively. Under the guidance of her tutors, Annie Willis and ALS Tutor Louise Locke, Molly took on every challenge with determination, pushing past social and personal boundaries that once seemed insurmountable.

When Molly started at Itec, maintaining eye contact and speaking confidently with others felt overwhelming. By the time she left the programme in August, she had become an integral part of her class, forming meaningful friendships and thriving socially.

Molly’s accomplishments during her time at JGW+ were extraordinary. She successfully completed her Employability Skills Qualification and, with the unwavering support of Annie and Louise, achieved a major milestone: applying for college. She attended an open day, completed her induction, and even delivered a confident slideshow presentation on her passion project, “Drawing Portraits.”

Beyond academic success, Molly made incredible strides in her personal life with a new confidence to attend appointments and open a bank account, marking new levels of independence and self-assurance.

Reflecting on her transformation, Molly shared, “I feel so much more positive about my future. My people skills are way better, and I’ve gained qualifications I never expected to get. I was nervous before starting, but I stuck with it and experienced so many amazing things. Looking back now, I feel silly for ever doubting myself.”

Molly’s story is a shining example of how determination and the right support can lead to profound change. As she moves forward with her college journey, her time at Itec will remain a pivotal chapter in her inspiring story of growth and self-belief.
