Growth on the Horizon
Katie Bishop’s journey with Itec Skills and Employment highlights the impact of personalised support and a learner-centered approach.
When Katie first joined Itec Skills and Employment, she faced challenges with poor mental health and self-confidence. These difficulties made it hard for her to connect with new people and envision herself in a professional setting or progressing toward her career goals. Although she had previously enrolled with another training provider, a friend recommended Itec, knowing that the learner-centered Jobs Growth Wales+ programme could provide the supportive, positive environment Katie needed.
During her induction at Itec’s Willows Centre in Merthyr Tydfil, Katie met her Youth Tutor, James Jones, who encouraged her to progress at her own pace and offered unwavering support. Since then, James has equipped Katie with tools, resources, and strategies tailored to her development. Itec’s holistic approach to well-being, combined with its dedicated team, ensures that each learner receives personalised support to overcome any challenges they face.
Over time, Katie’s confidence blossomed, and her anxiety lessened. She now feels comfortable expressing herself and can communicate ideas freely without fear of judgment. The centre has become a safe space for her, where she feels empowered to be her authentic self. Before joining Itec, Katie had achieved Level 3 ESW qualifications in English and Maths. With her newfound confidence and progress, she is now pursuing a higher-level English qualification. She has also achieved personal milestones, like living independently, and has strengthened her organisational skills to better manage her daily responsibilities.
Looking ahead, Katie dreams of working in animal care, driven by her passion for animals. She is committed to becoming the best version of herself to prepare for future placements. Itec’s Jobs Growth Wales+ programme remains dedicated to helping young people like Katie find excitement in their future and prepare for fulfilling careers. Reflecting on her journey so far, Katie shares: “I know that I am always going to be supported to be the best version of myself, and coming to a centre where I have people who know and understand me makes a big difference, as I felt that I had to hide for many years due to the stigma regarding mental health in young people.”
From a place of self-doubt and anxiety, she’s now moving confidently toward her career aspirations. With her determination and the unwavering encouragement from James, Katie has developed both the skills and self-belief to pursue her passion.
