International Day of Happiness
March 20th marks the ‘International day of Happiness’, a day celebrated to recognise the importance of happiness, and the impact you can have on the days of others.
This year’s theme is ‘Be Mindful, Be Grateful, Be Kind’, and so we have compiled a list of ways that you can tune into yourself, be thankful, celebrate the little wins and most importantly, pass that joy along!
Step 1: Be Mindful
It is easy to rush through the day to day without taking the time to notice the good things that have passed you by.
Slow down, take a deep breath, and take note of how you are feeling.
Being mindful involves paying attention to what is going on both inside and outside of ourselves and by becoming more self-aware, you contribute to a better mental wellbeing.
How can you be more mindful?
- Listen to yourself.
- Notice the everyday.
- Try something new, or something you have missed doing!
- Get some fresh air – go for a walk.
Step 2: Be Grateful
Being grateful helps you to notice the little wins – this could be as simple as a compliment, the good weather, or being with friends and family, and positively contributes to your overall wellbeing.
How can you be more grateful?
- Try to appreciate everything.
- Be present in the moment.
- Ask yourself “What am I grateful for?”
- Keep a gratitude diary.
Step 3: Be Kind
Being kind to yourself and others makes everyone’s day that little bit easier! Kindness not only boosts confidence, increases moods, and combats the negative effects of stress, but also encourages others to repeat these positive experiences and pass along that feeling of joy.
How can you be more kind?
- Look after yourself.
- Compliment someone.
- Be aware of your actions.
- Help someone when you can.
- Smile at strangers.
We can’t always change a negative, but by altering our outlook and response, we can make it easier to overcome.
Use today to take a second for yourself, look at the positives, be kind, and spread the happiness.
