10 Easy Tips and Tricks to Save Money on your Energy Bills

Right now, we’re living in some uncertain times. The UK is currently in a cost-of-living crisis. From October, it’s expected that the average British household will see energy bills rise by 80%. It’s easy to see these frightening figures and feel a sense of dread, wondering how we’re going to get through the winter this year. However, we’ve found 10 tips and tricks to help put your mind at ease and save you some money on your energy bills.

  1. According to the Energy Saving Trust, you can save up to £55 a year on your bills by just remembering to turn all electrical appliances off standby mode. Fortunately, almost all electrical appliances can be unplugged at the plug without affecting their programming. You could purchase a smartplug which will turn off all appliances on standby at once.
  2. The Energy Saving Trust also shared the useful tip that drying clothes on racks inside or outside in warmer weather can reduce the use of the tumble dryer, saving you up to £60 per year on your bills.
  3. To reduce the amount of water you use, make sure that your dishwasher is completely full. By reducing one run per week, you can save up to £14 per year.
  4. According to MoneySavingExpert, if you cut off just a minute of your shower time, you could save up to £207 on your energy bills! You could also save a further £105 on your water bills if you have a water meter. It could be worth timing your showers to ensure you’re reducing your shower time by a minute.
  5. According to the BBC, we waste approximately £68 million in energy by filling our kettles to the brim while making a brew. As a result, British Gas recommends that we not overfill our kettles and only use what we need when making our cuppas.
  6. It might be time to purchase that slow-cooker you’ve been eyeing up on Amazon, because British Gas has affirmed it’s one of the most energy-efficient kitchen appliances.
  7. According to Money Super Market, a smart thermostat can make your heating more efficient by only heating up the rooms you’re using.
  8. According to Ideal Home, covering your pans so your food cooks faster is a simple way to save money. Another tip is to turn off the heat on the stove a few minutes before you’re ready, as food will continue to cook under the residual heat, saving energy little and often.
  9. Octopus Energy has shared the tip that switching to LED light-bulbs, which use 70% to 80% less electricity than traditional light-bulbs, is a low-cost and efficient change that could save you up to £13 per bulb per year!
  10. Our technological devices can be such a massive part of our lives in the modern world that it could be worthwhile to invest in the newest models as they are much more energy efficient, according to U switch.

It’s incredible to see how even the smallest changes can make such a big difference! Using any of these tips and tricks can help you see positive outcomes and save funds.
